Why does the Safari browser extension block suggested websites?
Important note about the Safari extension:
The Safari browser extension is currently available only for users who had it installed previously. Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to download or install the Safari extension on newer macOS versions. Due to system-level changes in macOS, the extension does not work reliably, and this is something we’re not able to fully fix from our side.
We understand this may be disappointing, and we truly appreciate your understanding.
Safari is blocking websites before I finish typing a URL:
If a website gets blocked in Safari before you even finish typing its address, it’s usually caused by Safari’s Top Hit feature.
Safari automatically preloads the most relevant suggested website in the background while you’re typing. Because the page is technically being loaded already, the AppBlock Safari extension may block it immediately, even before you manually confirm the URL.
This behavior is caused by Safari itself, not by an error in the extension.
How can I prevent Safari from blocking suggested websites?
You can disable Safari’s background preloading to prevent this behavior:
- Open Safari.
- Go to Settings (or Preferences on older macOS versions).
- Open the Search tab.
- Uncheck “Preload Top Hit in the background.”
After turning this off, Safari will stop preloading suggested websites, and they will only be blocked once you actually open them.
